Our Include service is home to the national young carers initiative supporting children and young people who care for parents, siblings or others who suffer from chronic illness or disability

Young carer talking to a project worker

What do we do?

Our Include service does not see young carers on a one-to-one basis, but it campaigns for change, promotes best practice with central and local government, and works in partnership with key workers to support young carers on a national level.

Our aim is to develop a national focus for young carers, their families and those who work to support them; to promote common standards and to work towards the realisation of equitable services. We work to prevent children and young people taking on inappropriate caring responsibilities that impact negatively upon their well-being.

All of our work is informed by consultation with young carers and their families and those who work to support them.

What services do we provide?

  • The Young Carers Festival, in partnership with YMCA Fairthorne Manor, annually brings together over 1200 young carers for a weekend of respite, fun and consultation.
  • Our Young Carers in Schools programme is a free England-wide initiative run jointly by our Include service and Carers Trust. The programme comprises of a variety of online tools and resources, professional development opportunities and the Young Carers in Schools award.
  • Our Armed Forces Families work is funded by NHS England to look at the needs of children in Armed Forces Families undertaking caring responsibilities that may negatively affect their lives and to identify challenges they face in accessing support services and good practice support.
  • We utilise our expertise to provide training and consultancy to local areas and organisations to support them in raising awareness and meeting their legal obligations for young carers and their families.
  • We also provide advice and resources for young carers on their rights and social change, health, mental health and wellbeing, education and their finances and future as well as details of their local young carer’s services.
