Support for young people in care
Every young person has the right to feel heard. To have a say in the decisions affecting their life. Our services for young people in care in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire exist to make that happen.
Befrienders
Befrienders
Our Befrienders service supports children and young people in care aged 5 to 17 in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. Through the service, young people can access a befriender – a volunteer who will spend time with them, listen to them, and help them to make their views heard.
The young person will meet with their befriender once a month, at a time and place that suits them both. Befrienders are independent and confidential. The young person can opt out at any point.
Nottingham Advocacy Service
Young people who are looked after or who are in the care of children’s services have the right to have a say in the decisions affecting their life. To be listened to and taken seriously. To be treated fairly.
Our advocacy service helps to make that happen. We provide advocates for children and young people who are in care or a secure home, leaving care, homeless, classed as in need, or subject to child protection plans, in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. We can also help other advocates who independently support young people and make advocacy visits to young people (for example, young people living in residential homes or supported accommodation). Advocates can help young people to:
- sort out a problem or a worry
- understand their rights
- be treated fairly
- say what they think about things
- be heard
- sort out a problem the way they want it sorted.
Young people can self-refer to the service. Professionals who work with young people can also make referrals.
