A spotlight on our volunteers
We’re shining a spotlight onto our wonderful volunteers, who take time out of their days to support young people. From fundraising, retail, corporate engagement, and more, volunteers are vital and at the heart of the work we do. We spoke to Michael, a fundraiser, and Rocking Horse Pictures, an agency, about the different ways they volunteer their time and services to The Children’s Society.

Michael, fundraiser

Michael, fundraiser
Michael organises events in London in the run up to Christmas, alongside fundraising for The Children’s Society. He plays in a brass brand, which he organises and uses to raise funds for our organisation. In 2024, he raised just under £3,000 for The Children’s Society.
“I first played in a band raising money for charity on the streets at Christmas time in the late 1990's. For largely musical reasons I decided to organise my own group soon after.”
Michael quotes
“I find it very satisfying to bring music to people who may rarely hear live music, it is good to meet other players and most importantly to do something to raise money for a most worthy cause. Some of the donations are very large; £50 or even £100; perhaps these are people who now are able to show their gratitude for what The Children's Society has done for them.”

Finding fulfilment in giving
To people thinking about volunteering and supporting The Children’s Society, he says:
“Just do it! If you are thinking about it, the only way to find out how you will feel is to experience it for yourself! You may find that you really enjoy what you do, you may make some very good friends and there is also a deep satisfaction from giving your time and effort to help others.”

Become a volunteer
Whether it's speaking about important issues, mentoring young people, or volunteering in our charity shops, we have roles for all skills and interests.
Different types of volunteering
Individuals aren’t the only ones volunteering for The Children’s Society. Although fundraising, retail work, and awareness raising are some of the most known forms of volunteering, companies also volunteer their services to help us create a positive impact. One example of this is Rocking Horse Pictures:
Rocking Horse Pictures, pro-bono video production
Rocking Horse Pictures, pro-bono
Rocking Horse Pictures are a video production company who offer The Children’s Society free video production services through pro-bono work.
Volunteering their services comes from “wanting to give to charitable organisations that affect important positive change in the world.”

Rocking Horse Pictures quotes
“Working with The Children’s Society is a truly fulfilling and inspiring experience. As part of concepting and narrative development, we’ve been talking with people who work across the organisation, and it’s been really humbling and incredible to see the drive and passion drive they have - and the impact they make to improve lives for young people.”
To other companies thinking about offering pro-bono work for organisations like The Children’s Society, they say:
Go for it. As a company, it’s been a hugely rewarding experience to come together and work with TCS who deliver really critical services across the nation.
