Time for young people, Gateshead

Time for young people is our new emotional wellbeing support space for young people up to the age of 18 who live and study in Gateshead. We also support care leavers and young people with disabilities up to age 25.

Growing up can be difficult. Young people may be trying to figure out who they are and where they belong. They might be facing big challenges. We're here when you're ready to talk.

How Time for young people helps

Time for young people empowers young people to take time for themselves. You can press pause, breathe, and move forward. You can choose what support you access and when.

Our trained staff can help you as soon as you’re feeling unhappy or finding things difficult. We’ll support you directly. Together, we’ll work through your problems to try and stop things getting worse.

We can help with

We also help you to develop new skills and provide resources to support your wellbeing. That might include finding strategies and techniques to make your life easier, like how to manage a panic attack or get better sleep. We might suggest you look at other online resources or speak to another service.

We can help with:

  • feeling anxious, worried, or stressed
  • difficulty managing your emotions
  • trouble sleeping or sleeping too much
  • experiencing changes in your mood
  • experiencing a racing heart and not knowing why.

We also help you to develop new skills and provide resources to support your wellbeing.

Drop-in support

The support service will give young people a place where you can drop in and meet trained staff one-to-one. Whatever challenges you’re dealing with, you won’t be judged. Instead, you’ll get the tools you need to understand your emotions, build strong relationships, and feel stronger.

There will be space to relax and other practical resources, too. There’s no need for an appointment or a referral, and there’s no waiting list. Young people can come along and talk through what you're struggling with, whenever you're ready.

We'll also help you to develop new skills and provide resources to support your wellbeing. That might include finding strategies and techniques to make your life easier, like how to manage a panic attack or get better sleep. We might suggest you look at other online resources or speak to another service.

At Time for young people, we won’t assess or diagnose any conditions you might be dealing with and we won’t automatically make referrals to other services. There may be times where we feel we need to speak to other people, services, or agencies about something you have told us – for example, if you’ve let us know that you or someone else is in danger. We’ll always try to speak to you about this first and let you know what we need to do.

How to access Time for young people

Further support

Alongside our drop-in support, young people will be able to access more structured one-to-one sessions, over a longer period of time.

Young people will receive up to 6 one hour-long individual sessions with a trained wellbeing practitioner. These sessions will build on their strengths and skills, working with them to find effective ways to help. Sessions will be tailored to the young people’s individual needs.

Young people will be able to take part in group workshops, too. You'll come together with other young people who are facing similar challenges to work on mental health and wellbeing skills. Sometimes, we'll run these sessions with other expert organisations like local youth centres.

Further support

We'll work flexibly to offer you and your group support in the areas where you feel you most need help. These sessions will run over four to six weeks. Together with your wellbeing practitioner, you'll work through goals, self-help strategies, resilience building, and more, so that you feel empowered to take control of your own wellbeing.

Time for young people's structured support is designed to offer help as early as possible, before young people might need support from NHS mental health services, to prevent things from getting worse.

Please note that this structured support can only be accessed via referral. If you need help with this, please contact the appropriate referring agency or professional, or email timegateshead@childrenssociety.org.uk.

We'll also run educational workshops and awareness sessions for young people, their families, and professionals.

Need urgent support?

A mental health crisis is an emergency that has a direct and immediate threat to your physical and emotional safety. In a situation like this, it’s important to get help quickly.

Try to stay calm and ask someone for help. It could help to tell someone you trust, maybe a family member or a friend. They can be with you and help you decide what to do. They can also contact other services on your behalf.

If there is any immediate risk to life, contact the emergency services by calling 999.
