Beyond Gender Stereotypes

Beyond Gender Stereotypes is a free programme for Key Stage 2 children (7-11 year olds). It supports the PSHE curriculum and includes free, online training for educators and seven, fully-resourced lessons.

BGS supports primary schools to teach about restrictive or limiting gender stereotypes, and to encourage children, whatever their gender, to behave in gender inclusive and equitable ways. BGS is part of The Children’s Society’s Lifting Limits programme, and of the Global Boyhood Initiative, coordinated by Equimundo: Center for Masculinities and Social Justice, a US-based non- profit organisation.

Our impact

We're raising children's aspirations,.....what they might go on to next in their life. That's what we're doing when we're thinking about gender stereotypes.

Intro

You will find here all the information and resources you need to support implementation of the BGS programme at your school – whether you are a senior leader, KS2 teacher, or another member of the teaching or non-teaching staff.

The BGS programme includes:

  • a self-guided online learning course and associated guidance for teachers and other school staff;
  • a short series of lesson plans, designed to be delivered as part of PSHE, for all children in Years 3-6.

BGS has been designed to be fully consistent with current RSHE statutory guidance.

Introduction to BGS for all school staff

Your BGS Lead

Your school has selected a staff member – the BGS Lead – to be responsible for supporting the implementation of BGS and ensuring all school staff fulfil their roles concerning BGS. Throughout the project, the BGS Lead will support all KS2 teachers in teaching the BGS lessons, and encourage all other school staff to understand and support BGS in appropriate ways.

Please contact them if you have any questions or suggestions related to BGS.

BGS Staff Training

Self-guided, interactive, online training modules to support the delivery of BGS lessons are available for all school staff.  These modules will help equip all school staff with the skills and knowledge you need to support BGS at your school, and will strengthen your own professional development.

All school staff have a role to play, and there are three different versions of the online training course designed specifically for the following groups of staff:

  • Primary School Leadership and BGS Leads
  • KS2 Teachers and Teaching Assistants
  • Other Primary School Staff

All school staff can access the course relevant to them by following this link.

Further essential guidance on how to register for and complete the online courses is available here: Online Training Courses – User Guidance

We ask that all staff completing the course complete the pre and post training surveys linked in the course.

BGS Teacher Guidance

Together with the online training modules, this BGS Teacher Guidance is designed to equip KS2 teaching staff with the skills and knowledge required to deliver BGS lessons at your school. It also provides important information for senior school leaders about how to support BGS implementation.

The Guidance explains why is important to teach about gender stereotypes, offers an overview of the lessons, explains  teaching principles that will support effective delivery of BGS, provides further information for school leaders, and defines key terms used in the lessons.

KS2 teachers and teaching assistants should familiarise themselves with this Guidance before delivering any of the lessons.

Engaging with Parents and Carers

Engaging with Parents and CarersThis resource provides information about how school staff can engage effectively with parents and carers to build support for BGS and encourage them to promote its objectives. There is more information and support about this in the “Supporting Families” online training module.

The BGS Curriculum

The BGS programme consists of three 1-hour lessons for Years 3 and 4, and four 1-hour lessons for Years 5 and 6, delivered as part of PSHE. These lessons offer an engaging, age-appropriate and safe learning experience.

Comprehensive BGS curriculum resources include:

  • Detailed Lesson Plans
  • Engaging PowerPoint slides
  • Downloadable classroom resources
