Amy's story
Amy was facing more challenges than any teenager should. From family struggles, to other worries and all the pressures that come with growing up. When things reached a breaking point, we were able to step in to offer the support she needed. We have teamed up with BBC StoryWorks to produce a film for the In Pursuit of Wellness series, that shows Amy’s story and highlights the need for early intervention and support to help tackle emotional and mental health challenges before things get too much.

In pursuit of wellness

A helping hand
Amy is 15. A few years ago her parents divorced. She felt lost and angry inside. She didn't feel like she had anyone to open up to. Life felt like it was closing in on her.
When she started to take it out on herself, her mother realised she needed to do something. Thats when she was referred to Nick, one of our counsellors. Through Nick's guidance and Amy's unwavering resilience, she was able to reclaim her confidence. Step by step, she learned to navigate her emotions, find her inner strength, and emerge as someone ready to face the future head-on.
Amy's words of positivity
I'm sharing my story because I've suffered myself and I want to encourage other people that it gets better. It gets a lot easier if you open up to someone.

Wellness and mental health
Getting there early
With early intervention we wouldn't have to tell Amy’s story. Her bravery to speak out is a powerful reminder that the right support can truly change a young person’s life. Young people can find hope even during the most difficult of times. It’s also a reminder of how important it is to have someone impartial who really listens and cares.

Early intervention
We know that half of mental health problems experienced in adulthood are established by age 14.
The longer young people have to wait for support, the worse their situation gets. By spotting the signs of worsening mental health as early as possible, we can ensure a child doesn’t have to wait in the dark any longer.
The sooner a young person can get help with whatever their struggling with, the less bad it gets.

Looking after our mental health
In Pursuit of Wellness is a series of films and stories produced for the Global Wellness Institute (GWI) by BBC StoryWorks Commercial Productions explores wellness in a new way: its importance in every aspect of our lives, the science behind both ancient traditions and modern innovations, and the inspirational pioneers around the world expanding the horizons of wellness to be more inclusive and accessible.

Young people deserve support when they need it

Young people should be free to enjoy their childhood, and feel hopeful about the future. But for too many, this just isn’t guaranteed.
Hundreds of thousands of young people have sought help for their mental health in the last year. At The Children’s Society, we know that the sooner a young person gets the help they need, the more likely it is that help will be effective.
