Young Carers Festival

The Young Carers Festival, run by YMCA Fairthorne Manor in partnership with us, is part of the process of recognising, informing and consulting with young carers in order to better meet the needs of them and their families.

Since the first Young Carers Festival in 2000 when 600 young carers arrived at YMCA Fairthorne Manor in Hampshire, the festival has grown, with up to 1800 young carers now attending every year.

The festivals provide the young people with the opportunity to have fun, relax, socialise and have their voices heard about issues that affect them. The outcomes from participatory consultations inform future work and are communicated to the government.

Over the years we have consulted with young people on a range of issues including education, health, social care and whole family support.

Henley Festival

We are currently in an exciting three-year partnership with the Henley Festival which started in 2016 and will provide additional support to thousands of young carers.

The funds are being used to support young carers in the Henley area across Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire and make sure practitioners, directors of support services and commissioners will access specialist training to better identify and support young carers and their families from across these regions. We are also positively impacting around another 750 young carers across these regions by supporting 20 schools to join our national Young Carers in Schools programme.

The Festival, which has been running since 1983, brings artists of the highest calibre from all over the world. It draws an audience in excess of 30,000 to a quintessentially English location to experience UK music, art, comedy, food and culture.

The festival runs in early July every year on the banks of the river Thames in Henley

Several young carers will have the excitement of being part of the magical festival atmosphere, reviewing performances in the local paper and through online blogs. Our work exposing young carers’ stories will also be integrated into the festival itself – including a display of our Hidden photography exhibition - as well as the marketing and communications around it.
