We are an Approved Activity Provider for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, which means that volunteering with us can count towards your award.

By volunteering in one of our shops, not only will you help us to raise money to support our work improving the lives of the country’s most disadvantaged children and young people, but you’ll gain vital skills and meet new people. We have over 100 shops across the country and lots of other young volunteers are doing their Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE) with us too. There are many opportunities from helping us to sell goods, researching the value of books we receive and learning valuable skills in the retail sector.

How do I start?

  • Have a look at our current roles, or contact your local The Children’s Society shop
  • Fill in an application form.
  • We will then invite you for a short informal interview.
  • Before you start you will need to have a reference from your teacher or DofE placement coordinator.
  • Agree with the shop manager when you will come in. It could be for a couple of hours each week after school, or on a Saturday.

What you’ll get from volunteering with us

You are an important part of The Children’s Society and without your time, energy and skills we would not be able to change the lives of nearly as many children and young people as we do.

As a volunteer with The Children’s Society you will get:

  • Training and support to help you to do your role.
  • The chance to take part in different activities so you can develop your skills.
  • The chance to meet new people, make friends and have fun!
  • A volunteer manager, who will be there to give you all the support and guidance you need and complete the Assessors Report and any other paperwork necessary for your DofE.
  • The opportunity to get involved in other areas of the charity, such as campaigning and fundraising.
  • A safe volunteering environment.
  • Reimbursement of any travel expenses incurred.
  • The ability to fit your volunteering around your other activities and commitments.

How long will it take me to complete the volunteering section of my DofE with The Children’s Society?

This will depend on the level of DofE that you are doing. We ask all DofE volunteers in our shops to commit to a minimum of 2 hours a week; this is so that both you and the shop you are volunteering in get the most out of the experience.

If you are working towards your Bronze Award you will need to do 2 hours a week for 3 or 6 months.

If you are working towards your Silver Award you will need to do 2 hours a week for 6 or 12 months.

If you are working towards your Gold Award you will need to do 2 hours a week for 12 or 18 months.

What you’ll get when you complete your volunteering hours

  • A certificate - to recognise the number of hours you volunteer with us.
  • A reference that you can use to strengthen your college/university/job applications.
  • The opportunity to continue volunteering with The Children’s Society, either to complete the next DofE, or simply to gain more voluntary experience.

The DofE is a fantastic Award that will help you get lots of new skills and exciting experiences and The Children’s Society is delighted to support it. We hope that you will have a great experience.
