Celebrating 50 years of Christingle on Songs of Praise

Christingle is a special, memorable celebration that takes place in thousands of churches and schools across the country, from the beginning of December through to February.

We've teamed up with Songs of Praise to celebrate 50 years of Christingle. During the service, we reflect on the joy of Christingle and explore the difference that Christingle celebrations make to the lives of the vulnerable young people that you support with your donations.

As advent begins, we headed to Chester for a celebratory Christingle service, where you can see pupils from a local school choir singing a new song, commissioned for our 50th anniversary, Light a Candle.

The show also features an exclusive interview with Archbishop Justin Welby, some Christingle-themed baking and stories of how over the past 50 years Christingle has helped more than one million children. It's not to be missed.

How Christingle helps vulnerable young people

'The Children's Society gave me a foundation for a new life'

When Francess was 13 years old she came to the UK. She thought she was coming here for a holiday, but when the time came for her to return, she didn't go home, but was sent to live with a person she had never met before.

She was very unhappy and didn't have any money to even phone her mum. At just 17 she was made homeless. Francess didn't have clothes, food or any help from social services.

Without any family to turn to, Francess had to rely on friends and her church congregation:

'Even though I didn't have much, that was a lot for me, believing in God and knowing that things will get better.'

While studying hairdressing at College, Francess saw one of our leaflets, which offered help and support to all young people experiencing problems, including immigration issues. Francess got in touch, and not long after she met one of our project workers, Marie.

'The person I met, she's the loveliest of persons. She's passionate about helping these children and young peole who came to her. She was just amazing.'

Marie not only helped Francess to source the things that she desperately needed, but also became a source of support in her life. Through Marie, Francess was able to speak to a solicitor to help her with her scholarship and she supported her with her application to study at University.

'It was that emotional, that moral support that I didn't have from my family.'

Francess has since gone on to sit on our Board of Young Trustees and has graduated from University. She's about to get married and is looking forward to a very bright future.

'From me going to meet The Children's Society, it was the beginning of something great in my life. From that moment onwards till now, everything that's been happening to me has been good.'

Join us as we celebrate 50 years of Christingle

Christingle collections over the past 50 years have helped us to work with more than a million children and young people, but a million more are living with serious problems in their lives today.

This year, we want to help even more of the country's most vulnerable children, but we can't do it alone. You can help a child to feel safe for the first time this Christmas, giving them someone to turn to.

Your Christingle donation can make a real difference for a young person who has never experienced the joy of Christmas.
