We urge peers to support this amendment protecting children, which has three key benefits: it reduces the disproportionate impact of the bill on children and families, it improves support for working families and it reduces the impact of the bill on child poverty rates.

Nowhere to turn

Our report reveals that money given to local authorities to replace the Department for Work and Pension’s (DWP) Social Fund has almost been halved compared to equivalent spending since 2010. It also shows that almost two-thirds of local authorities are no longer providing interest-free emergency loans through their replacement schemes. We fear this could drive vulnerable families deeper into debt, as they are forced to turn to loan sharks and high cost money lenders.
