Pause centre in Birmingham

Pause is a recently launched drop-in facility in Birmingham city centre. Our aim is to provide young people aged up to 25 with advice, sign posting, and support with any concerns related to mental and emotional wellbeing.

Pause is part of the service offered by Forward Thinking Birmingham and is run by The Children’s Society.

What we do

The Pause service:

  • acts as vehicle for increasing access to information for 0–25 year olds
  • is a one-stop shop for support, advice and guidance for all matters relevant to improving emotional well-being and mental health
  • works closely and proactively with a range of Forward Thinking Birmingham pathways as a delivery point, and works in partnership with other multidisciplinary support services.

We offer the following types of access, meeting young people's needs:

  • walk-in – young people can come into the hub themselves or on behalf of someone else
  • telephone – a young person can call the hub to gain initial consultation advice and support over the phone
  • email – a young person can make enquiries via email
  • social media – we offer responsive and informative social media accounts
  • website - we aim to provide informative and clear information in our web content

About Pause and our approach

The Pause approach was developed by talking to young people, both experts by experience and young people interested in mental health. The views of the young people were captured through a general discussion, recording key comments and themes, ensuring we created a service that reflected their views.

Forward Thinking Birmingham is a mental health service for children, young people and young adults - anyone younger than age 25 - in Birmingham.

By working with partners to provide joined up care, young people are a step closer to benefitting from revolutionary mental health care. As part of the Forward Thinking Birmingham Partnership and the Citywide 0–25 mental health redesign, we have taken the lead role in the development and implementation of a city centre provision, which will increase access to emotional well-being/ mental health information, with particular focus on vulnerable children and young adults.

Pause centre in Birmingham

Forward Thinking Birmingham’s vision is for Birmingham to be the first city where mental health problems are not a barrier to children, young people and young adults, resetting the bar for generations to come.

We offer on-site support in many different ways. If you want, you can come a long to a workshop and create some art, or maybe you fancy going somewhere quiet to think Or maybe you simply just want to have a cuppa and a chat with a friendly face - someone to listen to you and try and help you work stuff out.

Pause is cool, bright and spacious. You can feel safe here and know that you are amongst people who are really happy to be there for you and support you.
