Step and Connect

Like you, we want better local facilities for young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

About us

Like you, we want better local facilities for young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

Step and Connect supports a team of young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in London to get out and review venues across North East London (Newham, Camden, Hackney and Tower Hamlets).

Young people are checking if venues are accessible and meet their standards.

The aim of Step and Connect is to help improve the health and well-being of young people with SEND aged 14–25 years old, through access to leisure services and activities.

We want to make sure that when you go out to have fun, you can access venues and they are suitable.

You can find all of our Easy Guides on Step and Connect by selecting the green button below:

Our aim is to get young people, like you, involved

What is the aim of Step and Connect?

Step and Connect is a service run by The Children's Society's Emotional Well-being team to help young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) to become more involved in society and more active in their local community.

It supports young people with SEND by sharing skills so that they feel confident  travelling independently and go on to use services and leisure activities in their community.

Our aim is to get young people involved, help them feel less alone and in turn improve their health and well-being.

Step and Connect achieves this in two ways:

  • Travel Training - supports young people so that they can travel safely and independently to access the leisure activites and services that they like

  • The Youth Champion - recruits young people to become independent assessors

Young people's reviews

We have created this site to store the information from the assessments that you complete. You can then look at what venues have been assessed and choose a venue that's accessible. You can also watch our interview with Kieran, below, to find out more aout the project and just how easy it is to get involved.

Would you like to become a young assessor?

What is assessing?

The young people that have been involved in helping us with Step and Connect reviews are called assessors.

Assessors is a fancy title which means young people have reviewed the places you might like to visit. This might be a cafe or a bowling alley.

Assessing is when you look at what is good, bad, or what could be better and then rate what you see. Assessing is common and it happens a lot. In various services it is a normal part of life, so don’t be nervous about doing an assessment.

They assess the accessibility of leisure activities and services .This means are you able to get into the building, can you read the information clearly, are the staff friendly?  Once assessments are complete they are uploaded to a website. This helps remove the barriers that stop young people from accessing services and activities.

What places can you assess?

You can assess any leisure place you and other young people would use in Tower Hamlets, Newham, Camden and Hackney – but not a school or college.

For example you can assess a local shop, bowling alley, cinema, youth club, local park, library, hospital, restaurant or petting zoo. You can also assess any activity you would like.

Who can be an assessor?

You can be an assessor if you are a young person with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities between 14 and 25 years old. You must be living in one of the following areas to take part: Newham, Camden, Hackney and Tower Hamlets.

What will I need to be an assessor?

What will I need?

To complete an assessment all you need is the form (online or a paper version) and yourself.

What happens at the assessment?

You don’t have to tell the venue what you are there to do. Businesses are used to having ‘mystery shoppers’ review their services so don’t feel worried to get going. We’ve compiled a guide to assessing so you have everything you need in one place. If you have any questions about the assessment after reading this contact us.

What will we do with your assessment once we receive it?

Share your review with the venue you assessed and upload it to the website for other young people to read.

The great thing about assessments is that once they are live on the site other young people can read them and make decisions about where they’d like to go. You’re giving back to your community and we think that’s awesome.

Get involved!

If you would like to become a young assessor, we have all the tools you need to get started. Your review will appear on the site once it’s been processed by the team.

What’s next?

Download the assessment form/survey - we can send you an assessment form by email or post for you to print out, or you can download one, complete your assessment and send it back to us. We’ll manage the rest!

We also have a step by step guide to assessing that runs you through every step of the process

You will also be able to see your review live online and use the resource to find new places to visit and activities to join in where you live.

It would be great to hear any suggestions on how we can improve and hear about how you found the assessment experience.

Were the signs and pics easy to follow? 9/10 ‘The signs/pictures within CAMHS are clear and easy to follow. CAMHS has a signage poster with its name and address outside the building which is enlarged, easy to read and understand.

Likewise, once you enter, CAMHS has signage which says ‘reception’ and ‘welcome’ in various languages in large writing.

Immediately, you can tell where to go.

In addition, CAMHS does have clear pictures for facilities such as toilets and the fire emergency exit, which people can read and understand’.
Were the staff helpful? 8/10 ‘All of the staff are professional and well mannered.

They support young people with mental health issues or learning difficulties in a friendly supportive manner.

Staff provide advice and opportunities for young people and can also make them feel relaxed in times of anxiety and distress. Even so, on some occasions the staff can be extremely busy. Although I understand the reasons behind this, I feel CAMHS should do their best to have enough staff and sufficient time for young people’.
Was it clean? 9/10 ‘An extremely clean place each time I visited.

The general area and furniture is well organised and arranged for people to use/access. Similarly, the toilets are well looked after.

Based on my experiences, there are never any hazards or safety risks, which is good.

To improve, CAMHS should provide hand gel for people to use if they want to promote cleanliness and hygiene’.
Did you feel comfortable? 8/10 ‘I feel extremely comfortable each time I go.

The building is well protected and has CCTV in operation. The waiting area is small but cosy to wait in until the staff come to pick you up.

All of the rooms are nice and quiet. The hallway is well decorated and is easy to move in.

Overall, CAMHS is a well presented building.’
Was the building physically accessible? 7/10 ‘I personally can access and use all the public parts of the building with no trouble. Even so, I feel it will be more difficult for people who are disabled in a wheelchair to access all of the public parts of the building.

The doors to enter and along the corridor are quite narrow in regards to space and so I think this will make it more difficult for disabled people. Therefore, I would recommend CAMHS takes measures to ensure their building is more user friendly for all in the future.’
Would you recommend it to a friend? 8/10 'Yes, I would definitely recommend it to a friend and to people with special educational needs or learning difficulties.’
Would you go again? 'Yes, I attend on a regular basis (every 1–2 months). I go for the young people’s participation group.

I like CAMHS because it is extremely friendly for people with learning difficulties or special educational needs. CAMHS is also a safe and calm environment.'
One thing you would change? 'CAMHS should provide more opportunities and trips for young people to be involved in.

I believe young people would take advantage of these opportunities.

CAMHS should also offer computers and educational support for young people as well. The staff at CAMHS I feel will be able to support young people in a friendly manner with their work, revision etc.'

One thing you would change? 'They should change the books for older people'
Venue comments The report mentioned that there are no lights in the lavatories. We do have lights in all our facilities but the switches are quite low down so as to be accessible to wheelchair users and young people so perhaps your members missed these.

The report also mentioned that our handryers were cold. We’re very sorry about that. These units are currently broken but please pass on that we are hoping to have these replaced soon so that the next time they visit they should be working.

Finally the report mentioned that your members would like different books in the Half Moon Library that are more suitable for older people. I have a few books for older readers so I will add these into the selection.

Were the signs and pictures easy to follow? 9/10 ‘I believe the signs/ pictures within Spotlight are clear and easy to follow.

Before you enter Spotlight, inside you can see a large circle with the name and so this automatically tells you about the location of the youth club.

Spotlight youth club is directly near Langdon Park school and Langdon Park DLR station.

I feel Spotlight should have a reception signage because, although once you enter the reception desk is to your left, I feel this will make it more understandable to everyone by having a sign. Even so, Spotlight does make use of signs and pictures for other purposes - such as showing where the toilets are for both males and females, the fire emergency exit and what is on each floor of the building etc. They are all clear, easy to understand and follow, and are highly effective.

I would recommend Spotlight improves with its signs and pictures by adding a few more in the building such as one for the reception.'
Were the staff helpful? 8/10 ‘All of the staff at Spotlight are professional and well mannered.

The staff are educated and do engage with young people at the youth club during different activities, which I believe is important in supporting young people and developing them.

On some occasions however, the staff are busy and do not provide the best support possible to young people. I therefore would advise the staff to ensure they prioritise their main tasks in a professional and effective manner to ensure they have sufficient time to spend with young people as well.

More so, I would urge Spotlight to encourage its staff to offer educational support and help for young people who may be finding it difficult to study for their qualifications for instance. This may make young people feel more valued at Spotlight and thus influence them to use the support which they might need to help them progress.'
Was it clean? 9/10 'Spotlight is an extremely clean place, each time I visit overall. The general area and furniture is well organised and arranged for people to use/ access. However, on some occasions I have noticed that the furniture looks a bit dirty and so I would advise Spotlight to either get new furniture or try to make the existing ones as clean as possible.

Similarly, the toilets are well looked after for people who need to use it.

Based on my experiences, there are never any hazards or safety risks within Spotlight which is good.

To improve ,like CAMHS, Spotlight should provide hand gel for people to use if they want, in order to promote cleanliness and hygiene.

More so, Spotlight youth club should offer, or consider offering, basic hygiene/ health and safety courses for young people to complete.

I am assured young people will enjoy and benefit from these opportunities given.'
Did you feel comfortable? 9/10 'I feel extremely comfortable and safe each time I go to Spotlight. I am able to relax and enjoy myself depending on the activity or programme which I am participating in.

The building is well protected and has CCTV in operation as well I think.

All of the rooms within Spotlight are organised and spacious. The Spotlight building has nice views available of Canary Wharf and the surrounding area. The hallway is well decorated and is easy to move in.

Overall, I feel Spotlight is a well presented building’.
Was the building physically accessible? 8/10 'I personally can access and use all the public parts of the Spotlight building with no trouble.

Before you enter the Spotlight building, there is a door which you have to push to enter followed by the ramp. Even though the ramp is user friendly for people in wheelchairs I feel the first door and the door after the ramp will be difficult for disabled people to open without assistance. I would therefore advise Spotlight to potentially make their main doors become automatic so that disabled people who are in wheelchairs can just push or press a button and then the doors will automatically open. I feel this will make it easier for everyone and make disabled people feel more welcome and respected by Spotlight.

The youth club does also have lifts available for disabled users to use to go onto each floor of the building as they are not able to use the stairs of Spotlight. Therefore, I am assured all of the public parts of Spotlight are physically accessible for everyone to access including disabled users. I would give Spotlight an 8/10 for the topic of its building being physically accessible for everyone to access publicly. To improve, I would advise Spotlight to implement the feedback I have given’.
Would you recommend it to a friend? 8/10 ‘I would recommend Spotlight to a friend, especially if they live in close proximity of this youth club.

Likewise, if my friend who constantly revises or stays at home but lives nearby the youth club and does not like going to far places but needs a place for leisure, then I would definitely advise them to try experiencing the activities and meeting the people at Spotlight.

I am assured Spotlight will be able to help them feel at ease and also become more social as well’.
Would you go again? ‘Yes, I attend on an inconsistent basis, such as once every couple of months.
I have many other commitments in terms of education, work, family etc. and so this means I do not attend Spotlight youth club on a regular basis.

I like Spotlight because it is easily accessible to travel to in terms of transport such as by bus, DLR or car.

Spotlight currently offers a wide range of activities for young people to participate in depending on their interests such as sports, drama etc. Spotlight is also a well- spaced and presented youth club environment which I enjoy because I feel at ease whilst I am there’.
One thing you would change? 'I have done assessing like this before. I did it at the Parents Advice Centre in Whitechapel, CAMHS, the Urban Adventure Base in Mile End and lastly the Bow Idea Store. I really enjoyed assessing the organisations I have mentioned because I visit them every so often. I feel well secure and known at these organisations.

Thank you very much for providing me the opportunity of doing another assessment!’

Were the signs and pictures easy to follow? 8/10 'The signs are easy to follow at present. In the past, there were not enough signages for people to follow and understand. Now they have a notice board sign, toilet sign and Head Office sign etc.

They have made it more easy to know what is where within the Urban Adventure Base.

This organisation does have pictures of activities they offer for young people, the staff as well. I feel these pictures are easy to understand and see'.
Were the staff helpful? 9/10 'Based on my previous experiences, there is usually staff available to answer your questions or to help you immediately. However, on some occasions sometimes the staff present may have other duties to perform making them extremely busy. As a result, this has taken them longer to help.

The Urban Adventure Base are all professional and polite. They are also friendly and well-mannered, which is extremely important in making me feel valued and welcome by them'.
Was it clean? 6/10 'The Urban Adventure Base is to a great extent clean. I do not use the toilets at this organisation but hope that the staff ensure it is cleaned daily for different users.

The furniture is comfortable and the general area is also clean. However, for some sports such as kayaking and bike riding some people bring in dirt within the Urban Adventure Base, which is not appropriate.

Therefore, I would recommend the Urban Adventure Base enforces a strict policy, which states that young people who participate in outdoor activities with this organisation are not allowed to enter unless they have dried, cleaned or changed themselves outside or home'.
Did you feel comfortable? 7/10 'I do normally feel comfortable in this place because the staff are friendly and helpful.

Even so, on some occasions some young people cause too much noise or behave inappropriately within the Urban Adventure Base.

But generally, the staff ensure the environment within the Urban Adventure Base is relaxed, peaceful and comfortable in order to make everyone happy’.
Was the building physically accessible? 8/10 'The Urban Adventure Base is most accessible without any trouble.

I could use all the public parts of the building easily. However, I have noticed that for the main office, which is upstairs of the building, does not have any lift for people to use if they are in a wheelchair. But the main office upstairs is for staff only. Thus, I feel they have not made it accessible for everyone because they will not allow people regardless to go there for any irrelevant reasons.

Nonetheless, the main lower floor of the Urban Adventure Base is definitely accessible and easy for everyone to use’.
Would you recommend it to a friend? 8/10 ‘Yes, I would recommend it to my friend especially if they live really close to the Urban Adventure Base. I already know some young people who attend the Urban Adventure Base currently.

The wide range of activities available, the location etc. is what makes the Urban Adventure Base a good organsiation’.
Would you go again? 'Yes, I am well-known at the Urban Adventure Base and attend there on a flexible basis. I have registered there for my Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award programme and have nearly completed it.

I enjoy the location of the Urban Adventure Base. It is easy to travel to and is in a convenient location. I also like the wide range of activities they have on offer.

The atmosphere in the Urban Adventure Base is well protected and calm. The staff do not tolerate any form of violence or bullying which makes me feel happy and welcomed there’.
One thing you would change? 'The Urban Adventure Base should have computer facilities for young people to use. At present, within the Head office and the lower ground office, the computers are mainly for staff use only.

The Urban Adventure Base should also offer more frequent accredited training programmes. I believe this will help young people and attract them to attend.

Lastly, the Urban Adventure Base should make its layout more organised. Some of the items within the Base are left in a mess and even on the floor. The Urban Adventure Base should look more clean and presentable’.
