Young Carers Festival

Every year, in partnership with YMCA Fairthorne Manor, we hold a festival as part of the process of recognising, informing and consulting with young carers in order to better meet the needs of them and their families.

Since the first Young Carers Festival in 2000 when 600 young carers arrived at YMCA Fairthorne Manor in Hampshire, the festival has grown, with up to 1800 young carers now attending every year.

The festival provides the young people with the opportunity to have fun, relax, socialise and have their voices heard about issues that affect them. The outcomes from participatory consultations inform future work and are communicated to the government.

Over the years we have consulted with young people on a range of issues including education, health, social care and whole family support.

HOW TO ATTEND - INFORMATION FOR PROFESSIONALS

YCF2018 - 29 June to 1 July

If you would like to attend the Young Carers Festival, you must come as part of a supported youth/community group such as a young carers project or school group. If you attend any of these groups, let them know about this amazing festival and refer them to our professional events area about applying to attend.

There are lots of things already planned for this year’s festival and with this year’s theme being ‘I’m here, right here- stand up and be counted' we are going to attempt a World Record involving standing up with linked arms!  There will of course be the numerous fairground rides, inflatables and paddle boards on the lake and we will also have the Planetarium, Bug Man (if you like creepy crawlies), Circus Workshop and wooden box making.  Don’t forget also to get the voices of young carers heard in the Voice Zone where you can win prizes as well as make something to wear or take home in the Creative Zone.

Booking packs for the festival are now available from YMCA.

To help with fundraising to attend, don’t forget to check out our information pack which provides ideas of how you can fundraise for your project - please note that our opportunities are updated regularly and although our information pack was correct at the time of publishing, it's important to double check which opportunities are still available.

If you have any enquiries regarding bookings, please contact YMCA Fairthorne Group directly and don’t forget to regularly check here for updates on the festival. We look forward to seeing you there!

Volunteering at the festival

We have plenty of volunteering opportuntities for you to get involved in*:

  • Friday 1pm onwards – setting up and possible involvement in the opening ceremony
  • Saturday (morning, afternoon or all day) – working directly with the young people; from craft making to helping on a consultation. Please indicate on the form if there is an area you would prefer to be involved in and also inform us of any skills you have, ie. a particular craft making skill.
  • Sunday (morning) – general clearing up and possible involvement in the closing ceremony.

*Please note, we do ask our volunteers to be 16+ in age and if under 18 that they are accompanied by an adult at all times.  Unfortunately we are unable to help towards travelling expenses.

YMCA volunteering

If you are interested in any of the following volunteering, we will pass your details onto YMCA who will contact you directly:

  • Friday from 1pm – various setting up duties as required by YMCA staff
  • Friday and Saturday night patrol - Another piece of volunteering we are asking for this year is to patrol the site throughout the night.  This will of course be done in pairs or in groups and will be organised and directed by YMCA Fairthorne.
  • Sunday – afternoon – YMCA would like people to stay on and clear up litter and collect tent pegs if possible.
