The Children's Society has been campaigning for a 60-day breathing space period for families and people struggling with debt for many years.

We welcome the government’s announcement to finally introduce this scheme at the start of 2021.

Dr Sam Royston, Director of Policy and Research at The Children’s Society, said:

“We know living with debt has a hugely detrimental effect on family life, leaving too many parents, children and young people feeling anxious, ashamed and alone. We believe over a quarter of a million children live in households in problem debt, this new scheme will offer a welcome relief for so many, giving them extra time and space to repay their debts, without facing rising fees or fear of visits from intimidating bailiffs.”
