Mark Russell, Chief Executive of The Children’s Society said:

“The Covid-19 crisis has highlighted the crucial role that many migrant workers play in delivering our healthcare service. We therefore welcome the government’s decision to exempt a wide range of overseas NHS staff from having to pay the surcharge to use the service themselves.

"As the government clarifies the details, it is imperative they include these workers’ children and families in the exemption. However we also feel the government should go one step further and consider the thousands of migrants living through the pandemic with no recourse to public funds – many of whom are also the key workers we are relying on so much. We believe everyone should be eligible for government support and no one is left to face this crisis with no safety net to fall back on”
