Why you should come to Young Carers Festival 2018 #YCF2018

Who are young carers?

Young carers are children under 18 who care for a friend or family member. This could be because they have an illness or disability, a mental health problem, or because they misuse drugs or alcohol.

Some young carers might have been looking after their family member for a long time, and some might find that circumstances changed very quickly, and they became a carer suddenly.

If you already go to a young carers group, then you might already know that young carers are entitled to certain rights under the law. But if this is all new to you, don’t worry, you can find out more about the support available to young carers on our Include website.

What is the Young Carers Festival?

The Young Carers Festival is an annual event, where young carers from all over England – and sometimes further – can gather together and be a part of something incredible.

The festival runs over three days – Friday 29 June to Sunday 1 July – at Fairthorne Manor in Botley, near Southampton.

Young carers groups arrive on the Friday afternoon, and the tents will be set up and waiting for you! Fun activities over the weekend include fairground rides, football tournaments, canoeing, yoga, arts and crafts, a chance to try your hand at astronomy, and much more.

As well as the opportunity to relax, have fun, and make new friends, the Young Carers Festival also gives young people a unique platform to make their voices heard on a national level.

You can visit us in our Voice Zone and have your say on the things that really matter to you:. It can be anything - education, healthcare, government policies… and if there’s something missing, tell us!

Be a part of something huge

The Young Carers Festival is run in partnership by The Children’s Society, and YMCA Fairthorne Manor, and it is the first and largest of its kind in the world.

Over twenty thousand young carers have visited over the last 18 years. Come and be a part of the largest gathering of young carers in the world.

If you join us this year, you will get the chance to be a part of our second World Record attempt!

I’m here, right here. Stand up and be counted.

We want to show that young carers are a force to be reckoned with, and that they deserve recognition and support. To do this, we are going to break the record for the greatest number of people all standing up at the same time, with their arms linked.

Count me in!
