Top five new ways to use an orange

Top five new ways to use an orange

Despite popular belief, oranges aren't just for juicing and eating. To celebrate Christingle's 50th anniversary, we've decided to come up with five new ways of using oranges, one for every decade this Christmas tradition has been around.  No prizes for guessing what the number one use of an orange is:

1. Make a Christingle

Top of the pile, Christingles are the number one use of an orange. What's a Christingle? It's an orange decorated with red ribbon, sweets and a candle - and they're lit as part of a community celebration around Christmas. If you've never eaten sweets from a cocktail stick attached to an orange, then you really need to broaden your horizons. Read more about this Christmas tradition and save some oranges for a Christingle event near you.

2. Sweeten your bins

Maybe your bins are sweet enough already, we're not here to judge. However, if there's a lingering scent of last night's supper scraps in your kitchen, stick a bit of orange peel in there. Now your will bins smell like the cobblestoned lanes of Sevilla. This is only advisable if you like the smell of orange, obviously.

3. Deter cats

Cats hate oranges. Fact. If you're fed up with the neighbourhood felines frolicking in your flowers, then sprinkle orange peel around your plants and problem solved. Personally, we love it when next door's cat comes to say hello but each to their own!

4. Play a game of wonky croquet

If you're a croquet fan then take things up a notch and play with an orange. Standard croquet balls are easy to hit in a straight line but have you ever tried with a wonky orange? That's what really separates the big ballers. If you haven't got a croquet set, why not play a game of citrus shotput in the park. Make sure you pick the heaviest orange in the bunch,

5. Make friends

If Tom Hanks can form a four-year bond with a volleyball, then maybe your new best friend is sitting in the fruit bowl. Just draw some eyes on an orange and let loose all your wordly woes. They're great listeners.
