Policy and Research visit to No.10 Downing Street

The week before last, I got to knock on the door of No 10 Downing Street. Not before we had taken a selfie first though! I thought I’d be too embarrassed to take a snap, but you don’t get many chances to pose outside London’s most famous address with a report you’ve been involved in writing. So excitement won over embarrassment.

Getting to No 10

We managed to get ourselves a meeting at No 10 thanks to The Good Childhood Report and a (slightly unexpected) Prime Minister’s Question from Lucy Frazer MP on 7 September 2016 about the report and the government’s provision of mental health support in schools. Theresa May responded to the question by agreeing that there is ‘collective concern’ about the way that young people’s mental health is dealt with, and adding that she knew that her right honourable friend the Education Secretary would be looking very closely at The Good Childhood Report.

Breathing space

Give young people in debt space to breathe

We talked through the report’s key findings and its recommendations, specifically our call for mental health and well-being support in schools to be a statutory entitlement. We also highlighted our briefing on the Children and Social Work Bill, which presents an opportunity to implement a National Offer for care leavers to ensure that this vulnerable group are given the opportunity to reach their full potential without being weighed down by undue financial pressure. In addition, we drew attention to our campaign to give families in debt a breathing space so that they can get back on their feet without visits from intimidating bailiffs and rising interest fees and charges.

After we left No 10, my two colleagues went off to another meeting in Westminster, and I came back to the office to work on another upcoming report on the research study Understanding Childhoods – A Qualitative Longitudinal Study of Growing up in Hard Times. Watch this space for more from the research team, including the upcoming adolescent neglect report.
