Why I chose to volunteer

In preparation for Volunteers Week, we asked Julie Araujo – an admin volunteer at our HQ office– to share her experiences.

Having been out of work for a while due to redundancy and then having to deal with a family illness, I asked myself what next?  How was I going to get back on track and hopefully re-establish myself in the work place?  What would help me to regain some of the confidence that ebbs away when you find yourself in this situation?

My volunteering experience

Volunteering was something I had thought about for a long time but wasn’t entirely convinced it was for me. Would it take up too much of my time?  Would I enjoy it? Would I learn anything?

The hours were flexible, I gained new skills and knowledge, and above all, I really enjoyed it

Rather than volunteer for a role which was completely unfamiliar to me I thought it would be best to stick with what I knew, so when I found an office role that interested me, I decided to give it a go.

On my first day I was apprehensive, but my volunteering manager put me at ease and my first day wasn’t too taxing. There was a certain amount of relief from my point of view as I didn’t know what to expect.

The hours were flexible, I gained new skills and knowledge, and above all, I really enjoyed it.

The people I’ve worked with have been extremely supportive and have kept me informed as to the various ongoing projects. I feel part of the team.

Five steps to volunteer

My experience of volunteering has definitely been a positive one and I am so grateful that I have had an opportunity to contribute in some way to a charitable cause.

It’s perfectly natural to be nervous, but there are some key steps to bear in mind if you are thinking about taking the plunge:
