Janine's story: We helped turn around a young runaway's life

Janine* shares her experience as a young runaway and how we helped her turn her life around.

Her story is featured in our Impact Report.

Janine's story

I was a good child, the golden child. I used to go to school every day, but then I got bullied, and instead of going to school I’d hang around in town, mixing with the wrong people.

I was taking M Kat every day, my friend nearly died from it. I was hanging around with a girl who stole money for drugs and I became like her. At 13 I thought she was cool, but she wasn’t, she was stupid, I know that now.

Running away broke my mum’s heart. I’d come home and she’d be crying but because I was so high on drugs I wouldn’t take any notice. My mum nearly had a nervous breakdown.

I went to a drug dealer’s house with a friend. I did so many drugs I couldn’t see. The guy picked me up and put me in his room. I don’t want say what happened next. Afterwards I tried to get home but I didn’t know what day it was, I didn’t know where I was and I didn’t have any money.

I couldn’t talk about it at first, but I told Sarah, my project worker and then I told my mum and my social worker. It’s important to have people to talk to who aren’t your mum and dad. The Children’s Society has really helped me turn my life around.
