'I'm glad I'm able to use my time and skills to help a great cause'

We’re happy to have Christina Grocott as our new volunteer here in our digital team. Over the next few weeks, Christina will write about her time. Today, she lets us know a bit about why she wanted to volunteer with us.

What do you do as Digital Volunteer at The Children’s Society?

I help to spread the word of the brilliant work The Children’s Society is doing and hopefully inspire more people to get involved.

I do this by making updates to the website, communicating with supporters via email campaigns and social media and writing for our blog.

Beyond being a volunteer, what else do you do?

In between volunteering for The Children’s Society I am preparing to go travelling around South East Asia next month. I am also working through an online course learning to write code and build a website.

What kind of code are you learning?

I’m learning HTML which stands for HyperText Markup Language and is the main language for creating webpages, CSS which stands for Cascading Style Sheets and is a language used for website presentation and Javascript which is used to create interactive effects.

How did you come to volunteer here?

I was looking to get some more digital experience as I would love to work in this area when I return from travelling. I am fascinated by the way the digital world is changing the way people interact with each other and how the internet is becoming increasingly and enormously valuable to charities and their supporters.

I also wanted to volunteer for an organisation making a real difference to the lives of disadvantaged children and young people.

In addition to helping children, are there any other causes you support or are passionate about?

I am passionate about reading and believe that everyone should have access to books. Once a month I volunteer at a mobile library set up by Quaker Homeless Action. We visit various hostels and soup runs around London, providing books to borrow for people who may not otherwise be able to take books out of the library.

So far, how have you found being a volunteer here?

I am really enjoying volunteering for The Children’s Society. I’m learning lots of new skills and it’s only my first week! Everyone is really friendly and I’m glad I’m able to use my time and skills to help a great cause.
