How long do 100,000 athletes need to finish the London Marathon

On 23 April 2017, more than 35,000 athletes, including our team of fantastic runners, will line up for the 2017 Virgin Money London Marathon.

Running goals revealed?

We compiled a huge interactive chart that tallies, by hour and minute, more than 100,000 runners' finishing times in the 2014, 2015 and 2016 London Marathons.

Although everyone ran the same 26.2 miles, there was a lot of variance in the amount of time people spent on the course, but there are also some common themes.

The charts notable bell shape to the curve follows a similar pattern across the years. There are also definite peaks just before the 3:00, 3:50 and 4:00 hour marks, suggesting a surge in pace as runners try to meet their target times.

London Marathon runners' finish times, 2014-16

Our data is from the Virgin London Marathon website.

For simplicity, we rounded all finish times down to the nearest whole minute. So if someone finished at 4:22:38, their time was tallied as 4:22. Also, we only charted finishing times of eight hours or faster.
