Everyone dressed like me during our Santa Run

Santa's story

I'm not a natural born runner but last year when my wife told me about an exciting event taking place to raise money for the good work being done by The Children's Society, I couldn't resist.

'It's only 5km', she said.

'Ho! Ho! Ho!' I said. 'I'll do it!' But I had no idea what I was letting myself in for – I travel everywhere by sleigh and had never taken part in a running event.

I signed up online – that was nice and easy, and a fundraising page was automatically created for me too. And I got a free Santa suit too, which I loved. It’s nice to have a spare. Ho! Ho! Ho!

Last year my training mainly consisted of eating mince pies and running around after my little helpers to make sure all the toys were ready for Christmas eve.

Many people are familiar with what I do but in case you’re not, I deliver toys to children on the night before Christmas. I do this by flying around the world in my sleigh pulled by magical reindeer, one of whom has a glowing red nose. I enjoy saying ‘Ho! Ho! Ho!’ quite a lot, too.

Everyone was dressed like me!

On the day of the race I popped on my new suit, arrived at Victoria Park in London. What to my wondering eyes did appear but hundreds of people dressed exactly like me! Ho! Ho! Ho!

I don’t know if you’ve ever shown up to a race featuring hundreds of people dressing up like you but it’s strange, especially at first. Then I spoke to people, sharing my experience of delivering millions of gifts to children in just a few hours, fuelled mostly by biscuits and milk.

After a few stretches to warm up the limbs, we were on our way. Ho! Ho! Ho!

My new fellow Santas were great – they encouraged me to keep going, and were there at the end to celebrate me crossing the finish line. I had done it! I had completed my first ever 5k Santa Run! Ho! Ho! Ho!

I’ll be back again this year

I never should have worried about taking part – it was so much fun! Ho! Ho! Ho!

I glowed even more than usual, partly due to the sweating, and partly because the sponsorship money I raised helped children and young people when they are at their most vulnerable, and had nowhere left to turn. In fact, that was the best part.

So, what are you waiting for? Join me and hundreds of other Santas this year. Sign up today to take part in London’s biggest Santa Run on Sunday 6 December in Victoria Park, E8.
