Celebrating Mental Health Week

Our drop-in mental health service, Pause, is unique. It’s different from other mental health services.

At Pause young people don’t need an appointment;  they can just turn up and chat with someone about how they’re feeling. We host lots of creative workshops for the young people and there’s an iPad bar where they can browse our website for information, handy tips and resources.

Open seven days a week, we’re there for anyone aged 25 or under that may need help and support with their mental health.

We know that helping young people to have positive emotional well-being and mental health can empower them to take control of their lives, and help them to achieve the dreams that may not have seemed possible before.

Transforming children’s mental health

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re celebrating Pause and the work the team are doing to help young people in Birmingham thrive, whether through one to one counselling and therapy, group workshops, or events and activities to promote positive mental health. Every day, we see the difference Pause is making to the lives of young people.

Before I came to Pause I was absolutely terrified to come because I just automatically thought I was gonna be judged, but what happened was completely different.  Pause has been open in Birmingham’s city centre for a year, and in that time we have supported over 45,000 young people and their parents and carers. We also provided one to one support to 1168 children and young people to help address issues such as anxiety and depression.

Our creative writing group has been particularly popular, helping young people to express how they feel about their mental health as well as developing their skills in poetry and story-writing.

The power of volunteers

Pause would not be the success it is today without the help of our amazing volunteers. They work tirelessly to make sure Pause runs smoothly and that the young people receive the best support possible.

‘The experience I had was honestly great. Although it’s part of the job to help us, it honestly felt like we had known each other for years. The helpfulness and understanding was just over the moon and they don’t judge you either, at all.’ - Young Person

Many of our volunteers come from a variety of different backgrounds, but all share the same determination to help young people feel better about their mental health. Volunteers have contributed over 2,000 hours to Pause to date.

Thank you to all of our volunteers who do everything from welcoming visitors, supporting parents and carers, to crucial administrative work. Thank you also for learning and picking up skills so quickly and for being resilient and adaptive in an often emotionally challenging environment.
