BenevoLent: Carry your cross with courage

Fantastic resources to engage your church in praying, giving and acting for vulnerable young people this Lent are now available.

BenevoLent has ended this year but you can still support our work - find out how today.

Over Lent we’re offering weekly suggestions for prayer, action and reflection on the gospel passages. (This reflection is also available as a PDF to print and share with your congregation.)

This week we’re reflecting on Mark 8.31-38 and Jesus’ call to take to take up our own cross: ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.’

Reflect

By this stage in his ministry Jesus knows what lies ahead of him. But when he shares this teaching with his disciples they don’t react well.

We don’t know why Peter rebuked Jesus for sharing what he faced. Maybe he felt it was too graphic, too sad, or maybe it felt like defeat and that there was no hope left.

Today we often still find hearing bad news difficult. There are things that we don’t want to hear or that we want to deny. This is true for many of the stories we hear from children and young people with whom we work.

But this passage also reminds us that following Jesus is not an easy option. It requires sacrifice and learning to be part of God’s plan for the world not just our own.

This Lent, may we not shy away from uncomfortable truths but seek out God’s plan and play our part in helping usher in God’s kingdom with hope and life-changing transformation.

Pray

Loving God, you called your Son, Jesus to face the suffering and hardship of the cross. In following your Son, you call us to face suffering and hardship for the sake of the good news. Help us to carry our cross with courage as we walk alongside others filled with hope that our self-denial will lead to the joy of the resurrection.

Act

Why not sacrifice something this Lent? Using our BenevoLent tool you can see how much money your sacrifice could help our work with young people.
