Advent video: 'It puts you in that mindset of . . . I'm not worth as much as everybody else'

Today we continue the second week of Advent, focusing on the theme 'A child shall lead them' and Isaiah 11.1-10.

Don’t miss Sam’s story

In this excerpt from ‘Poor Kids’, a BBC documentary about some of the millions of children living in poverty in the UK, Sam and his sister share their experiences of growing up poor.

After watching the film, you might like to reflect on these points:

  • What strikes you as most poignant in this film?
  • Is there anything you personally relate to?

Reflecting on 'Poor Kids'

As Christians we are called to be the loving hands of Christ. We also believe in the power of prayer.

Find a moment today to reflect on the film, on Sam and his sister.

We invite you to think about the times you have judged others and contributed to their ‘hating themselves’ or their low self-esteem, to think about the times you have felt judged and demoralised, and to place these memories before Jesus and pray.

Loving God, who sent your Son to save us,
bring hope to all those facing discrimination or bullying because of their poverty.
May we, through the work of The Children’s Society,
make a difference to the lives of your children,
as we bring your message of joy and hope to all those we meet
this Advent season.
We make this prayer through Jesus Christ,
made incarnate this Christmas, and always.

'Poor Kids' was created by True Vision Productions Ltd. Read more about the film on the BBC website.
