Advent: A temple for the Lord

Trust is something that comes with relationship. Today Rose Hudson-Wilkin explores the role of trust in the relationship between David, Nathan and God in 2 Samuel 7.1-11, 16. Trusting in God and making space to listen to God’s ambitious promises for us is not easy but it definitely worth it.

Are you in tune with God?

In 2 Samuel 7.1-11, 16 we learn of David’s deep desire to build a temple for the Lord. God had been good to him. He was conscious of the way God had journeyed with him, and in effect, he wanted to do something back for God; for him, what a marvellous opportunity, to show his appreciation by building a sacred space, ‘a temple where God could dwell’ a temple to house the Tabernacle of the Lord.

We are told that Advent is a time of getting ready, and for our preparation this week, our reading directs us to reflect on the deep desires that we often have. These desires are real, we plan to do and achieve so much; but our reading asks us to step back and consider what God might be saying to us. Are our desires in line with what God wants? Like Nathan, we may even have friends who encourage us along a particular pathway (Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the Lord is with you.  (2 Samuel 7.3)

We can be thankful however, that Nathan the prophet spent time listening to God also. This enabled him to go back to the King and to give him another perspective. God had something special for King David – ‘Trust me - I am going to make your name great, ……I will give you rest from your enemies..’ (2 Samuel 7.9,11). What God had in store for David was far reaching; what God has promised to do for us too is far reaching. This season of Advent, allows us to set aside the space, to find and listen to those known to us who are in tune with God, so that we may hear about that which God has in store for us.

In effect, we are being asked to trust God. We do not need to put on a show for God. It is God’s love for us, God’s desire for us that will really make a difference. And all we need to do, is to step back and trust in that promise and love.
