Abu – An award-winning inspiration

Our annual Over the Rainbow event is an important celebration of children’s achievements. It’s an inspiring day and the stories that come out are incredible. Every child there has achieved a huge amount despite difficult circumstances, turning their lives around or making a real difference to other children in their local community.

One of the highlights of the day was seeing Abu Alamer, 21, from Coventry, receive an award at Over the Rainbow for his outstanding contribution to helping others.

Abu won his award for the invaluable support he provides to others. Despite having to cope with his own difficulties as a young refugee (having come to the UK without his family) Abu plays a vital role at our MY-Place Youth Club in Coventry. At the centre, he acts as an interpreter and role model for young refugees who have been forced to flee their country.

Giving back by helping others

Abu’s confidence has grown since he has been supported by MY-Place Youth Club. He now helps other young people who feel isolated and vulnerable, and was nomiated for the hard work and dedication he has shown at the centre.

Abu told us: ‘I am grateful for all the support I have received from The Children’s Society over the years. I am happy that I can give back by helping the staff and other young people and am very excited to receive this award!’

Our Chief Executive Mathew Reed said: 'Abu is a bright, caring young person and an inspiration to us all. The huge difference he makes to others through his help and support is extremely admirable.'

For  many children who attended the event, Over the Rainbow gave them a rare chance to relax, have fun and be young. It felt like all the stresses had been left behind as the event hummed with laughter and excitement. I was struck by the children’s resilience and positivity even in the face of very challenging circumstances.
