A mountain to climb

Growing up in the care system and experiencing, first-hand, the vital support that charities can provide, Gavin Bowstead – now a volunteer for us – has gone the extra mile (or in this case the extra 40 miles up a mountain) to raise money for other vulnerable children and young people.

Climbing Kilimanjaro

Eighteen months ago I came up with a mad idea of doing something a bit special to push my limits and raise money for charity. Along with my best friend George, I soon found myself putting a deposit down for an ambitious trek up Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa.

When I was younger I was in the care system for a few years before I was adopted. I started working for charities and now volunteer for The Children’s Society as a way of giving my time back to others who need the support. It’s great to be able to make them my chosen charity.

George chose to raise money and awareness for the MS society in honour of his mum, who has suffered with the disease for nearly twenty years.

Our fundraising journey

We have held five events over 12 months to fundraise for the trip and have raised £1892* with more than £500 via JustGiving.

We held two casino nights, hosted a quiz night, cycled the distance from Torquay to London, organised charity football matches, hosted a Halloween event and rallied support from local pubs and sponsors through money box donations.

Thank you

Thank you to everyone who has shown support or donated so far and a special thanks to the team at Genting Casino Torquay and those at the York Pub, whose generosity helped to make all of this possible.

*£1892 raised is the current raised total at publication. You can still donate on Gavin's JustGiving Page.
