We've all seen the ugly headlines. From gang members to celebrities, time and again adults are abusing their positions of power to groom and sexually exploit some of our most vulnerable children.

But these headlines only tell part of the story. At The Children’s Society, we work with thousands of children who have been the victims of this awful crime, and the statistics are truly shocking.

Right now in the UK, more than 16,500 children are in danger of being sexually exploited.

Sarah* was in a desperate situation with no one to turn to. Thankfully we were there for her.

When Sarah was 10 she was put into care. She was moved around different foster families and kept running away. When she was 14, she met Nick, who was 25. Despite their relationship being violent and Nick taking drugs, Nick was the only person in her life and Sarah thought it was love. But Nick didn’t love Sarah – he took advantage of her situation to sexually exploit her.

Luckily, Sarah was referred to our Safe Hands project by the police. We gave her the counselling and support she needed to move on with her life, and thanks to her project worker Zoe, she finally has someone she can rely on.
