Credit crunch starting to hit?
13 August 2008
The Children’s Society is a founding member of a coalition of over 120 organisations united to demand that the Government keep the promise to end child poverty.
One in three children live in poverty in the UK today. That is one of the worst records of child poverty in Europe despite it being the fifth wealthiest country in the world.
Poverty damages children’s lives and society. Children who grow up poor often do not reach their potential and are more likely to leave school without qualifications. This impacts on their ability to get a good job and financially contribute to society.
Many are unable to afford school trips and activities; school uniforms or warm winter clothes, to go swimming or celebrate birthdays.
Poverty also affects health. The life expectancy of the poorest children is a decade shorter and infant mortality is twice as high.
The Government has pledged to end child poverty by 2020 and halve it by 2010, but less than two years away evidence shows they are in danger of missing the 2010 target.
A recession is hard for everyone, for the children we work with the impact could be catastrophic. The Children’s Society is trying to make childhood better. We need your help.
March for something you care about. March to make childhood better and end child poverty.
Bring your family and friends to the biggest staged event to End Child Poverty in London on Saturday 4 October.
The Government has made a once in a lifetime promise - lets make sure we do all we can to hold them to it.
