Phil Baker - an inspiration
13 August 2008
The children and young people we work with are remarkable. They face challenges every day. The Children’s Society tries to make their childhood a little bit better in any way we can. Sometimes however, we meet young people who face situations and challenges beyond our control. Phillip Baker was one such person.
Diagnosed with a brain tumour at the age of 13, he showed incredible bravery and humour throughout his illness. His mother passed away at the time of diagnosis and Phil’s determination helped his family to support each other. Being a teenager and worrying about every day things is already hard enough, but Phil was faced with the prospect of not recovering from his tumour.
Not wanting to miss out on life, Phil didn’t change a thing. He represented Rugby Swimming Club, helping them into Division One; his football won the first division of the Leicester Football League and dominated the Coventry minor league.
When he broke his arm playing his favourite sport, he still chased after the football and happily showed off his subsequent scar, telling people that it was from a shark bite.
He was brave to the end. Phil passed away on 1 June 2007. Before he died, in true spirited fashion, he organised his own funeral, organised a big party and wrote his own obituary. Phil described his party as ‘quality’ and encouraged everyone to come wearing their team’s football shirt.
Phil wasn’t a young refugee, he didn’t have to look after other family members - essentially he didn’t need our help. He had a secure and loving family and a good childhood. He did however recognise the importance of our work and the difference he could make to young people, like him. Instead of having flowers at his funeral, Phil decided that donations should be made to charity.
A year later, his friends and family celebrated his life with the perfect tribute – a football tournament with all donations raised going to The Children’s Society. With his Dad as organiser in chief, he said afterwards, “the tournament went really well.. ..thanks to all those who played and supported in memory of a brave young man, Phil Baker. The event is a reminder to all of us, just how very precious each child is.”
Not only did the tournament raise a wonderful £200, but Phil’s family also set up a special living memorial fund online, so that friends and family can continue to remember his humour, generosity and determination.
Phil Baker continues to inspire and change lives, allowing others to benefit from his kindness and courage.
