Moira Murray
Safeguarding Coordinator
Moira Murray is currently the Safeguarding Coordinator for The Children’s Society, with responsibility for all aspects of safeguarding and child protection including historical abuse. Since joining The Children’s Society in 1998, she has been involved with child protection work at both a local and national level.
In May 2008, Moira was one of four voluntary sector experts appointed to the board of the Independent Safeguarding Authority, which will oversee the new vetting and barring scheme for people working with children and vulnerable adults. When it is launched in October 2009, it will provide the most comprehensive vetting service in the world. Moira was appointed to the board based on more than 30 years of experience in the area of child protection and safeguarding.
Her previous experience with Sir Roger Singleton’s Independent Panel of Experts in 2006 involved overseeing List 99, a listing of those deemed unsuitable to work with children. Moira was then seconded to the Department of Children, School and Families from 2006 to 2007 to independently review cases, which came under an Historic File Review, of individuals previously referred to List 99.
Moira previously worked as a Guardian ad Litem (now known as Children's Guardian) advising Family Courts as to the outcome in childcare proceedings and adoption cases. In addition, she has worked as a paediatric social worker at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London.
After graduating from Goldsmith’s College, University of London in 1974 with a Bachelor of Education Degree, Moira decided to enter social work. From 1975 to 1980, she worked as a social worker and team leader for Southwark Social Services in London. In 1979, she obtained a postgraduate Diploma in Applied Social Studies (CQSW).
When Moira is not spending time with her two daughters, aged 20 and 22, she enjoys reading, cooking, visiting art galleries, listening to a wide range of music, from opera to Amy Winehouse, and making trips to the cinema.
