September 2013 prayers
A prayer based on Philemon 4-7
Thank you God for the faith and love of children and young people.
Please help us as a church family to learn from and be encouraged by one another. May young inspire old and old inspire young. We pray God that you would help us to partner together in sharing the faith and hope we have in Christ and deepening our understanding of your love.
Please Lord, be with all those preparing to return to school or college this week and give them the courage to show and share your love in those places of learning.
Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes Prayers – Based on Psalm 139
Sing a round of Head Shoulders Knees and Toes and then pray together
Person at the front shouts ‘HEADS’ and everyone responds ‘HEADS’ and then everyone who can points at their own or someone else’s head.
Someone prays: Lord thank you that you know our thoughts. Help us to be thoughtful.
Person at the front shouts ‘SHOULDERS’ and everyone responds ‘SHOULDERS’ and then everyone who can points at their own or someone else’s shoulders.
Someone prays: Lord thank you that you carefully and wonderfully put together every part of us. Help us to look after our bodies.
Person at the front shouts ‘KNEES’ and everyone responds ‘KNEES’ and then everyone who can points at their own or someone else’s knees.
Someone prays: Lord thank you that you know us so well that you see every time we move. Help us to go to the places you lead us to.
Person at the front shouts ‘TOES’ and everyone responds ‘TOES’ and then everyone who can points at their own or someone else’s toes.
Someone prays: Lord thank you that you care about even the small parts of us. Help us to try to care for each other. Sing another round of Head Shoulders Knees and Toes.
These prayers can be extended by inviting people to think of a prayer linked to eyes, ears, mouth and nose.
A prayer for those who struggle to be heard
Loving Lord, thank you that you see and hear all people. Please Lord, help us to be more aware of those who get lost and ignored in our society.
Please help us to make a conscious effort to listen to those who find it difficult to make their voice heard. Help us to enable those who are often left on the side-lines to participate in the centre.
Help us to value people as you value them and to speak for people in places they can’t speak for themselves.
Please bless the advocacy services of The Children’s Society. Thank you for the independent advocates who stand up for children’s rights and promote participation work.
A prayer based on Luke 16:1-13
Generous God we thank you for all that we have, both worldly possessions and treasures that cannot be counted or seen. Help us to be good stewards of all that you have given us.
Help us to be generous and not to hold on too tightly to things that we could share or give away. Help us not to get so caught up in acquiring wealth that we become blind to the needs of others in our local communities and in the wider world.
May we express our worship to you in the service of others. Please help us to support those who are living in poverty, especially children who have to grow up without sufficient food, shelter or resources. Help us also to get alongside those who are unemployed especially young people struggling to have hope for the future. Thank you that there is always hope in You, help us to share that hope.
