Ask the Government to protect care leavers from falling into debt

A care leaver

Our new report, ‘The Cost of Being Care Free’, uncovers a worrying trend of care leavers falling into debt and financial difficulty.

We found that harsh benefit sanctions and insufficient financial education is leaving thousands of young people leaving care vulnerable to debt, destitution and visits from bailiffs.

'…I get this big lump sum of money, but I don’t know what to do with it.' Care leaver

Many young people struggle with their finances when living independently for the first time. But this is a particularly difficult period for care leavers as they don’t have family to support them.

Lacking the financial education they need to budget and manage bills can result in a vicious spiral of debt that is difficult to recover from.

Too often, care leavers only receive financial advice once their situation has already reached crisis point.

We think this should change.

That’s why we are asking the Government to give care leavers the financial support they need to transition into adulthood.

Join us, ask the Government to do more to help care leavers in the difficult transition into adulthood.
