The Children's Society in South Yorkshire includes the Embrace project, which achieves improved outcomes for refugee and new migrant children and young people through a range of group and one-to-one activities. We are committed to working in partnership with service users and other agencies.

We use advocacy as a means to raise awareness of refugee and new migrant issues. By empowering refugee and new migrant communities to independently access services and represent themselves within decision-making bodies, we aim to make our work sustainable.

Our current activities include:

  • a range of pupil-centered courses for schools and colleges in South Yorkshire. Welcome packs and college orientation leaflets are just two examples of activities available to enhance student engagement and improve cohesion in schools. Please contact our schools worker for more information.
  • our Big Lottery reaching communities volunteer coordinator recruits, trains and supports volunteers working in schools and with the Roma/new migrant community. This includes group work and one-to-one support for children and young people as needed. Please contact our community volunteer coordinator for more information.
  • a Roma initiative designed to increase the resilience, life skills and aspirations of young Roma people. Regular group social opportunities are a feature of this project. Please contact our Roma project worker for more information.
  • a Department of Health funded volunteer coordinator recruits and develops a health-orientated volunteering team. Volunteers support social and emotional well-being through thematic group work and supportive activities. Please contact our Department of Health volunteer coordinator for more information.
