National Mentoring Initiative

Programme manager: Claire Wetton
The National Mentoring Initiative works to realise The Children's Society's vision of a good childhood for all children by training and supporting volunteer mentors to work with young people who are facing difficulties.
We provide one-to-one mentoring to young people who, through their behaviour, indicate that they are likely to be on a path towards poor outcomes. This includes low educational attainment, low levels of personal and psychological well-being and risky or anti-social behaviours. We also support those who we feel could achieve more with some additional, personalised voluntary support.
We assist mentors and local communities to build purposeful and positive relationships with young people, helping them to explore their aspirations, fulfil their ambitions and to have positive experiences together. We give children the hope and confidence they need to face the future with optimism.
The programme has been running for two years but will unfortunately be closing in February 2011.
