The Stars National Initiative is a hub of information, support and guidance on parental drug and alcohol misuse, and the impact it has upon children and families. We help and work with people across the UK.

Our aims are to:

  • Enable the voices of children, young people and families affected by parental drug and alcohol misuse to be heard.

  • Assist in increasing the capacity of all those working with children, young people and families affected by parental drug and alcohol abuse to recognise and respond to their needs, and promote good practice and information on existing provision and support.

  • Inform and shape the development of policy and practice around the support for children, young people and families affected by parental drug and alcohol misuse and to raise awareness of this issue.

Support for practitioners and adults

We support and equip practitioners by offering resourcesevents and training and one-to-one advice. Drawing on direct participatory work with children it promotes children's voices and experiences, and works to influence government policy that affects this group.

Significant achievements to date include supporting more than 1000 practitioners with training, resources and support, advising the government on policy development and facilitating children's contributions to British and European research publications.

Some of our key resources include our Ask me about me DVD for training sessions and our You are not on your own booklet to help children and adults talk about a parent’s drinking. We have also compiled a wide range of other valuable tools for your practice.
