The Children’s Society runs the Streetwise project in Coventry, which delivers preventative work and support to young people who are at risk of being sexually exploited. We currently receive funding from the Edith Murphy Foundation and the Community Development Foundation (on behalf of the Home Office).
- We provide one-to-one intensive support to young people referred to the project by other professionals.
- We deliver group sessions to young people in schools, children’s homes and pupil referral units, in partnership with CRASAC (Coventry Rape and Sexual Assault Centre), Kairos (working with street sex workers), and COMBAT (Combining Against Trafficking). The sessions raise awareness of the dangers of grooming and cyber-grooming, and support young people to stay safe. We also deliver awareness-raising sessions to other agencies and front-line staff.
- We are also working in partnership with the Coventry Community Safety Team, COMBAT, West Midlands Police and Terence Higgins Trust, on the Say Something If You See Something campaign, addressing the issue of young people being sexually exploited at ‘hotel parties’. We have produced posters and leaflets for hotels to display and distribute, and offer hotel staff with free, awareness-raising training.
