Focusing English for Speakers of Other Languages on Community Cohesion

We believe that the provision of ESOL is fundamental to rebuilding lives and fostering good relations between different groups. Our experience of advocating for refugee children and families who are trying to access ESOL tells us that current provision does not meet demand, and we strongly urge the Government to increase investment in its provision. We have seen the way that ESOL can unlock potential, enabling children to achieve in schools and lifting refugee families out of poverty by enabling them to find work. As such we believe the DCSF, which has a remit to help children achieve their potential and those other departments involved in cross-departmental work to lift children out of poverty, share the responsibility for ensuring its continuation and funding its provision.
