The Children’s Society’s submission to the Inquiry by All Party Parliamentary Group on Child and Youth Crime The Carrying of knives and bladed weapons by young people

The Children’s Society is deeply concerned about the serious risks, violence and deaths faced by some young people and we are supportive of attempts to understand and tackle these problems effectively. We believe that the relationship between young people and weapons is a very complex one. We think that to answer the questions about the prevalence of young people carrying weapons, the extent of this problem and how characteristic it is for particular groups further research is needed. In this submission we look at the contributory factors causing some young people to carry knives and other bladed weapons. Our contribution is based on learning from our direct work with children and young people, including those in trouble with the law, and research.
