Summer comes early to The Children’s Society
Today we lead busy lives. We often have little time for the important things in life. This year, at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, The Children’s Society presents a practical back garden. Created by award winning designer, Mark Gregory, it is a space to get back-to-basics and enjoy quality time with your most significant people – your children.
Bringing together family life with a busy lifestyle, this garden provides an escape - your own plot of land with multi-functionality. This garden emphasises the different ways that we can take time out to enjoy family time, get healthy, go organic and create new childhood memories.
This garden is about now. The issues and the trends of today, designed for the adults of tomorrow - children. The vegetable and herb beds, planted by the family, provide an activity for them to play and learn together as well as a source of fresh, seasonal produce for the table. Mark’s latest innovative solution for drying laundry sits alongside his ingenious discrete composting and water harvesting facilities.
The garden is enclosed by pollution tolerant, multi-stemmed Ginkgo trees and vertical planting (Pratia pendiculata) used as a living alternative to fencing. Raised vegetable beds and water bodies stand alongside Boxus cubes and decorative planting, giving way to a gravel centre of the garden to help water run off. A Garden Room provides the family with a place to escape for some quiet time as well as a space to store tools and dry clothes.
