Statement about commercialisation of childhood review
Statement by The Children’s Society about the Reg Bailey review into commercialisation of childhood:
Bob Reitemeier, Chief Executive, The Children's Society, said:
'The Children's Society welcomes the wide-ranging review into the way that modern society pressures and sexualises young people.
'Our well-being research has shown that almost one-third of young girls (28 per cent) are unhappy with their appearance. Young people feel that they have to keep up with the latest trends, whether online or offline, and this increasing pressure is bound to lead to lower self-esteem.
'Sexualisation of children blurs the boundaries between childhood and adulthood. This can lead to young people being exploited. An extreme example of this is the young children who run away and are targets for sexual exploitation because they are viewed as sexual objects.
'It is vital that children are educated about the dangers posed by social networks and the pressures that commercialisation exerts.'
