Response to the Government's plan to sign the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in full

19 September 2008

Bob Reitemeier, Chief Executive of The Children's Society, comments on the Government's plan to sign the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in full:

"The Children's Society warmly welcomes the Government's decision to sign the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in full after 17 years. It is a significant decision sending a strong message that all children are entitled to equal protection and care regardless of their immigration status.

We hope this move will see an end to all of the current practices within the immigration process that violate the rights of children, especially the detention of asylum seeking children.

We are looking forward to working with Government to make practical changes to the current system to ensure that this vulnerable group are treated as children first and foremost."
