Liberal Democrats call for end to child detention
The Children's Society and Bail for Immigration Detainees are delighted that the Liberal Democrats have pledged their commitment to ending child detention in immigration centres.
The two organisations – united under the OutCry! Campaign - condemn the unnecessary practice of immigration detention of children which seriously harms children’s physical and mental health.
As the Liberal Democrats note, we are routinely locking up children, who have committed no crime, for months at a time. This is not the kind of behaviour that we expect of Britain in the 21st Century.
We strongly urge the Labour and Conservative parties to follow suit and pledge to end immigration detention of children. The major political parties must all unite to end this abhorrent practice.
The Children’s Society and Bail for Immigration Detainees are currently campaigning to end the immigration detention of children and their families. Funded by the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund, we are campaigning together under the banner OutCry! - www.outcrycampaign.org.uk
