The Children's Society responds to Gordon Brown's Labour Conference speech

23 September 2008

Bob Reitemeier, Chief Executive of The Children's Society, comments on Gordon's Brown's speech at the Labour Party Conference:

"The Children's Society welcomes the additional help Gordon Brown has pledged today for the poorest children and families, through additional nursery places and access to technology at home. Too many children are currently prevented from reaching their full potential by poverty.

However if Gordon Brown is to honour his renewed commitment to end child poverty, £3 billion will need to be pledged in the next budget in order to meet the target of halving child poverty by 2010.

We urge everyone to join the End Child Poverty day of action on 4 October, to help ensure Gordon Brown’s Government finds this money and keeps this promise.”
