We submit our Fair and Square petition to the government
Today at 10 Downing Street, a group of young people will join us as we submit to the government our Fair and Square petition to extend free school meals to all children who need one. Tens of thousands of people signed the petition, sending a clear message from the public to the heart of government.
Free school meals already lift 140,000 children out of poverty every year and we think extending them to all children families in receipt of universal credit would lift a further 100,000 children out of poverty.
Hunger is a real problem in schools. Two-thirds (66%) of teachers we spoke to stated that staff provide pupils with food or money if they come into school hungry. Nearly three-quarters (72%) have experienced pupils coming into school with no lunch and no means to pay for one. Nearly all (98%) of teachers support our Fair and Square campaign.
Now is the time to act
Tens of thousands of people from across the country showed their support for the campaign and signed up in our shops, children’s centres and online in a fantastic demonstration of support for this campaign and for children.
The government is currently considering a number of options to address the future of school meals as they overhaul the current welfare system. This petition is crucial in demonstrating that there is widespread public support for ensuring that all children in poverty receive a free school meal.
To 10 Downing Street and beyond
Because so many of you signed the petition we wanted the prime minister to know how strongly you felt. That is why we and a group of schoolchildren will deliver your signatures directly to the Prime Minister’s home at 10 Downing Street today.
Now that the government know how many of you care about free school meals we will be continuing to fight to ensure that children aren’t going hungry in school.
The government still have to make a decision on this and your support and signatures could make all the difference.
Thank you for your support. We’ll be in touch with further updates on the campaign. If you haven't joined the campaign already, please add your support
