Special delivery: young people join us to deliver 90,000 Fair and Square petitions
At the moment, out of the 2.2 million school-aged children living in poverty, 1.2 million do not receive a free school meal. That needs to change – that’s why we created our Fair and Square campaign, which asks the government to ensure that all children in poverty receive a free school meal.
We created a petition to show the government how many people believe that these meals are important. In total, we collected more than 90,000 signatures, which is a fantastic show of support.
Last week five young people joined us to deliver the petitions to 10 Downing Street.
Even though it was extremely cold, Chloe (far left) , Teresa, Kai, Lotfi, Billy (far right) were great! They patiently waited while we took lots of pictures of them handing in the petition to 10 Downing Street and they helped us make a really great film, expressing our gratitude to everyone – petition-signers and supporting organisations – that has supported the campaign.
It was a really exciting day. None of us had ever been to 10 Downing Street before and it was very strange to know that we were standing outside a building that I normally see on the news. (We even saw David Cameron – he said 'Hello' as he walked past us!)
Here is how the young people who joined us described the day:
Chloe: 'The day was fantastic. Also seeing David Cameron was a great experience!'
Teresa: 'It was a great experience and I am glad I was picked to go. It was shocking to see David Cameron walk past us. Overall it was a fantastic experience.’
Kai: 'I was shocked to see David Cameron and having so many photos taken was a bit weird.'
Lotfi: 'A very rewarding experience – I loved it! It was so scary when we got to Number 10. So many photos were taken I felt like a model!
Billy: 'It was one of the most memorable things I’ve ever done!'
Even though we have reached a big milestone in our campaign, we are not finished. If you did not sign our petition, please join our campaign today.
If you did sign the petition, we’ll be in touch soon with more information about the next phase of our campaign. Thank you for your support.
