'Go faster, Daddy': Training for the RideLondon-Surrey 100
On 1 August, Chris Burman-Day will support our work by riding 100(!) miles in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100. As he gets ready for his big bicycle ride, he answered a few questions about his training, motivation and what he has learned so far.

What inspired you to raise money for The Children’s Society?
My wife works for The Children’s Society, so she volunteered me to run the BUPA 10k with her. Then I heard about the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 and as a keen cyclist I was eager to embark on this new challenge. I managed to rope in my colleague Mark Walker to also take part so I am not riding on my own.
The course is iconic and it is for a great cause. I have two children who have been born into a loving and stable family, where they are loved and encouraged to flourish. Sadly there are thousands of less fortunate children fighting harm and neglect in their daily lives, many of whom run away from unhappy and scary home lives with no one else to turn to. I wanted to do this challenge to help The Children's Society to support these children.
How do you stay motivated to train?
Thankfully the RideLondon-Surrey 100 is in the summer so I won’t have to contend with snow and cold weather as I train. The only way to train is to get on your bike and do the miles, start out with short routes and then build it up to longer on the bike and more miles. Where I live in the Cotswolds we have some steep hills so I am hoping that will prepare me for the challenge of Box Hill.
The whole family is helping with my training, we are all getting out on our bikes every weekend. My 2-year-old son loves it when he goes in his bike trailer, there is nothing quite so motivational as the sound of him shouting 'Go faster, Daddy!' as I pedal us both up a hill. He will be there on race day with his mummy and sister cheering me on, which will really help.
What fundraising tips would you give to other fundraisers?
You won’t reach your target if you don’t ask everyone you know to help support you. I have been asking my friends, family and colleagues. We are planning a fundraising barbeque, selling unwanted items on eBay and thinking of any other way we can raise money. Every donation helps towards my fundraising no matter how big or small.
I am taking part in this challenge with Mark Walker, my colleague from ELLE Security Group (ESG). ESG is sponsoring our team, which will help us both in our fundraising efforts. We are really grateful for their support.
What gear or gadgets help in your training?
I use an app on my iPhone that tracks my miles and speed. This helps me to keep track and make sure I reach my training targets. Other than that I have my trusty bike, a helmet and of course my Lycra.
What events have you done in the past?
I have done various running events, cycling races and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. The RideLondon-Surrey 100 will be the longest cycle challenge I have done. It is 100 miles and will be tough so I am really looking forward to reaching the finishing line on the Mall.
What advice would you give supporters who are considering a fundraising activity?
Go for it! Not only is this going to be an opportunity to take part in an iconic cycle race but knowing that every mile we complete will help vulnerable and disadvantaged children have a good childhood, makes all the effort worthwhile.
