Our response to the EU directive on human trafficking

23 March 2011

Bob Reitemeier, Chief Executive of The Children’s Society, said:

'The government’s decision to opt into the EU Directive on Human Trafficking could be a significant step forward in making sure that child victims are given the protection they desperately need.

The Children's Society’s own research highlights some of the horrific experiences faced by children trafficked into the UK.

All too often, children involved in this illegal activity due to coercion are treated as criminals - rather than victims. The EU Directive provides the government with the opportunity to make a real difference to these incredibly vulnerable children. We are pleased to see provisions for appointing an independent guardian for every unaccompanied or separated migrant child, which would provide parental responsibility to support them and make decisions based on their best interests.'
